According to the forecast of the Ukrainian Scientific Center for Marine Ecology, as of January 8, 2025, the coast of the Odessa region is not threatened by fuel oil pollution, which entered the marine environment as a result of the accident of the Volgoneft tankers on December 15. Currently, there are no prerequisites for its contamination.

This was reported by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine in Telegram on January 9, reports Social Crimea.

It is noted that according to the latest satellite images of Sentinel-1, a significant distribution of fuel oil along the southern to southwestern coast of the occupied Crimea has been confirmed. In the areas of the city. Sevastopol and m. Kacha recorded oil stains up to 15 km long, and the total area of pollution of the Black Sea water area reached about 1000 km².

At the same time, there is a continuation of pollution of the Caucasian coast, in particular in the area from Cape Panagia to Anapa.

According to the forecast, as of January 8, 2025, the coast of the Odessa region is not threatened with fuel oil pollution, and at present there are no prerequisites for its pollution.

Also, the State Ecological Inspectorate of Ukraine initiated an appeal to the Odessa and Mykolaiv OVA to initiate the convening of extraordinary meetings of the TEB and Emergency Commissions to plan measures for the localization and elimination of possible fuel pollution of waters and the coast.

Recall that due to the spill of oil products near the Kerch Strait, Ukraine plans to apply to international judicial institutions, in particular to the International Court of Justice of the United Nations, with a lawsuit against Russia for violation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Earlier it was reported that fuel oil, which is distributed as a result of the accident of the Russian tanker Volgoneft in the Kerch Strait, may pose a serious threat to the Odessa coast.
