For the third year of a full-scale invasion, Ukraine stopped the transit of Russian gas in the interests of national security

Ukraine on January 1, 2025 at 07:00 officially stopped the transportation of natural gas from the Russian Federation through its own gas transport system.

According to the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, the relevant decision was made in the interests of national security, and international partners were informed about it in the prescribed manner, reports UNIAN.

“We stopped the transit of Russian gas, this is a historic event. Russia is losing markets, it will suffer financial losses. Europe has already decided to abandon Russian gas. And the European initiative Repower EU implies exactly what Ukraine has done today,” said Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko.

Since January 1, the gas transport system of Ukraine operates in the mode of absence of transit of Russian gas. As it is added, the infrastructure of the gas transport system was prepared in advance for functioning in the mode of zero transit and reliable gas supply to Ukrainian consumers.

According to Reuters, the transit stop will have significant geopolitical significance.

“Moscow has lost its dominant share of gas supplies to European Union countries in favor of competitors such as the United States, Qatar and Norway. For Europe, the loss of supplies of cheap Russian gas has led to a significant economic downturn, a surge in inflation and an increase in the cost of living,” the article explains.
