Scholz decided that it is not necessary to support Ukraine “as long as it takes” before the elections

German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbok and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius want to allocate about three billion euros for arms supplies to Ukraine before the Bundestag elections, but Chancellor Olaf Scholz resists, writes UNIANwith reference to Der Spiegel.

The publication notes that the list of weapons for Ukraine was compiled shortly after the collapse of the government coalition of Germany in November 2024. This package included three Iris-T air defense batteries with missiles to them, Patriot missiles, ten wheeled howitzers and artillery ammunition.

In the autumn, the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Defense of Germany explained the need for additional assistance by saying that Ukraine's needs could not be foreseen under the past planning. As the publication notes, it is about the acceleration of the Russian offensive and the fuzziness of the geopolitical situation after the victory of Donald Trump in the US elections.

The implementation of this plan stalled in early January, as Scholz's office informally made it clear that it did not support a new package for Kiev. According to the publication, the reason was that Scholz does not want to put the future government of Germany in front of the fact.

In addition, Scholz does not see the need for urgent action, considering the allocation of about 4 billion euros for military assistance to Ukraine this year as sufficient. In addition, Ukraine can use the G7 loan in the amount of $50 billion through proceeds from frozen Russian assets.

Spiegel interlocutors suggest that Scholz does not want to announce further arms supplies to Ukraine in the midst of the election campaign. Probably, the chancellor fears that this may repel potential SPD voters.
