The Russian Academy of Sciences called the spill of fuel oil in the Black Sea the catastrophe of the century

This was stated by the scientific head of the Institute of Water Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences Viktor Danilov-Danilian, reports Crimean wind. The scientist suggested that fuel oil would reach the shores of Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey.

“For the first time, fuel oil is poured in such large quantities. From my point of view, this is the most serious environmental disaster in Russia since the beginning of the 21st century,” the scientist said. According to him, the spill of diesel fuel in Norilsk in 2020 (then Putin declared an emergency at the federal level, and the damage amounted to $2 billion) is incomparable with the current one, because then “everything was local” and it was possible to quickly eliminate the consequences.

What happened is a terrible blow to the ecosystem, Danilov-Danilian added: “The death of tens of thousands of birds, many dolphins, great losses in coastal flora and fauna. In such an environment, even if it is in salt water, practically nothing can live.” And the removal of 200-500 thousand tons of contaminated soil will lead to the reformation of the coast.
